Talk:Tunnels

From USAFA Folklore

Jump to: navigation, search

I have a VERY detailed and comprehensive map of the tunnels (much, much better than the one on the old folklore page). However, I don't know that it would be a good idea to post it here, due to security concerns. Any opinions on that? We can just re-post the old map, or I can submit my new one. Or, I could sanitize my new one somewhat, for example by removing the locations of all the access points, and deliberately throw in misinformation. I know there are lots of errors on the old map, too.

Here's a very shrunken down image of the new map, just to get an idea of what we're dealing with. --Heinous 16:32, 17 August 2006 (PDT)

I think we should publish it. --209.163.167.101 17:33, 17 August 2006 (PDT)

How about asking someone stationed at the zoo currently to snoop around and see if it's restricted in some way. Wouldn't like to see the Wiki or USAFA Today shut down for a security violation. --80lady 07:40, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

Well, the tunnels have long been off limits to cadets, but they still explore them regularly (the fresh graffitti every year is evidence). I don't know how big the hit is for being caught down there, but I doubt it's too harsh unless they can prove you had some kind of criminal intent. I am also not worried about Akkmed seeing the map and trying to bust his way in, but some bureaucrat might think that there is a serious threat of specifically that, and get USAFAToday in trouble.

Also, the map is detailed enough that it could be a considerable spoiler for cadets who haven't explored yet. Much of the magic of tunnel exploration is having only a vague idea of where you are, and not knowing what's around the next corner.

I did not know there was a tunnel going underneath the chapel...Can someone send me that map? --Critical Info 16:43, 9 March 2007 (PDT) That's not a tunnel, it's a utility connection. If you were to pull up the sidewalk along that path, you would find a very shallow trench with steam pipes and electrical conduits. Don't ask how I know.

I've uploaded a sanitized version of the map. Slightly better resolution, but less detail, than the thumbnail on the talk page here. It is all that I am willing to share. There is one copy of the complete, unedited map, in the hands of a current Cadet, who shall remain nameless. No further distributions will be made.

[edit] The treasure room

To keep this pervasive legend alive.

I KNOW that a Spitfire was donated to the Academy in the early years. Problem is, I have lost the documentation I had about it and have only a few photos that I managed to dig up a few years ago. I reasoned that the Spitfire was later donated to the AF Museum or someplace like that. Any old grads remember a Spitfire anywhere on the Academy grounds and where it may have been kept? What about the Liberty Bell replica that the '76 era grads remember?

Furthermore, after reconstructing the steps Rick Broome said he took as he told this highly incredible story, I found the "door" which I believe to be the most likely candidate for the access point to the treasure vault. My personal bet is that behind this door is something very mundane, such as a conference room. I have some old structural engineering plans that inconclusively suggest that this may be the case. At any rate, there is somewhat of a discontinuity on said plans near the location of this mystery door (As you can see I spent a substantial portion of my time as a cadet researching these incredible and outlandish claims, while bored to tears during various restrictions). I am hesitant to post them here because it would be a security problem, but I have no reason to make this stuff up, either. A free beer to any Cadet who can find out what is on the other side of this door.... have fun, but don't get busted! --Heinous 01:31, 15 August 2007 (CDT)
