Combat Survival Training (CST) replaced SERE in 1995. The new program essentially removed the resistance and escape portions of SERE, retaining the survival and evasion portions. Flight crew members who completed CST at the Academy would be expected to complete the resistance portion of SERE at Fairchild AFB later in their careers.

CST was removed as a summer program by the Commandant after the summer of 2004. The reasoning behind this decision was to allow third class cadets more opportunities to participate in Operation Air Force.

The Commandant recently announced that CST is being reactivated for the Class of 2011.
