Category:Summer Programs
From USAFA Folklore
Summer programs are those courses of military training and academic research or instruction that are completed over the nine weeks of the summer. The summer session is divided into three periods, each lasting three weeks. Cadets normally are required to participate in summer programs during at least two of these periods. If a cadet is in good standing, he is normally allowed to take leave for one three-week period.
Some summer programs have been required for all cadets. The six weeks of BCT is required prior to the fourth class year. For most of the Academy's history, three weeks of either CST or SERE training has been required between fourth class and third class years. Other required programs have included Global Engagement (starting in ___), Operation Non-com, required after the fourth class year, and "field trips" to operational Air Force bases, such as Operation Air Force/Operation Third Lieutenant, or the CONUS/ZI Field Trip. At times there has also been a requirement that cadets participate in at least one program in a leadership position (such as BCT or SERE cadre) during their cadet careers.
